Trisha and her two companions had returned and it was growing dark before the vidicom began to function again. Meanwhile, Celia had received radio messages from a few of the local farmers. None of them had any more information. Colin had voiced his suspicions about the Trapies, and then, he had fallen silent when he glimpsed Lucy’s pale, anxious face.

A colored test pattern filled the screen for almost half an hour before any sound was heard. Then, Peng Wu, head of the communications network, appeared on the screen. He apologized for the disturbance to the system and then said in an unusually serious voice, “I have been permitted to transmit the preliminary news. The Atrapako now govern the city. They are in control of the communications network, the fusion power plant, the shuttle landing field, and the main computer systems. The Atrapako General will broadcast a statement in one hour from now. Before his statement, we will transmit news reports of the coup.”

The news reports first showed the chaos in the main control room of the communications network as a number of silent Trapie Reds swarmed through the doors wielding bulky weapons. The few humans in the room fell back in dismay. Order was restored when a Blue walked in. It was apparent that similar scenes had taken place all over the city as unprepared human operators were surprised and supplanted by the aliens.

There had been little resistance to the takeover. It had been well organized with simultaneous attacks on the main computer, communications and energy centers. Once the communications system was shut down, no warning messages could be transmitted. Most of the human faces on view showed perplexity. The displaced human operators were later shown helping the Atrapako to restart the systems and describing their correct operation.

One significant case of resistance was reported. An Atrapako Yellow had suffered a broken arm and two humans received serious injuries when an angry group of humans threw a home-made bomb. Lucy was not too surprised to see her old boyfriend, Roger, among the group who were arrested and disarmed by the Trapies. The two innocent human bystanders were in hospital in a critical condition. That attempt at fighting back had ended as a fiasco with the major causalities arising from the coup.

In the farmhouse, the guests sat as if stunned. Celia, as a good hostess, served food and drinks while they watched the news reports. Lucy was struck dumb with anguish. She wondered what had happened to Sa Kamizan. Colin claimed he had always suspected such a takeover was imminent. Lucy refrained from reminding him that he had not shared her own anxiety a few days ago. She felt personally responsible for the aliens’ behavior, since she had so many unpleasant interactions with the Trapies in recent days.

Soon the moment they had been awaiting arrived and it was time for the General to appear.

“Who can it be?” asked Trisha. “I didn’t realize they had such an important leader.”

Lucy felt a sudden chill of premonition as the Blue Atrapako General appeared on the screen.
